Piri plays the main drum of the palo (or "caja"). Palo is part of the ritual music called "Congos" in Cuba. These forms of Afro-Cuban religion was originally practiced by slaves from both Congo (now Republic of the Congo, and now the Democratic Republic of Congo ex-Zaire) and Angola. Palo is played in different styles in different parts of Cuba where it is practiced.
